GHOSTLIGHT ENSEMBLE THEATRE CO.

Ghostlight Ensemble Theatre Company is a Chicago-based storefront theater company whose mission is to shed light on the human experience and provoke communal connections beyond the edge of the stage. The company needed a flexible brand identity that could be easily applied to a variety of media and
still feel consistent.

A “ghost light” is an electric light that is left energized on the stage of a theater when it is unoccupied and would otherwise be completely dark. It is typically an exposed incandescent bulb on a portable light stand. The lights are both a safety measure (preventing nasty falls in a darkened space) and, if you are superstitious, a way to appease ghosts who would want to perform on the empty stage. This made the use of an illuminated light bulb the natural choice. The weathered type and overall appearance is a nod to the idea that despite
this being a new theater company, its members were all experienced
theater professionals.

Besides designing the brand identity for Ghostlight, I also designed the show posters for the company’s first two seasons. Each poster design was also adapted to fit into the group’s social outlets and website.
